What to read. The National Center for Employee Ownership (426 17th St., Suite 650, Oakland CA 94612) publishes any number of brochures, pamphlets, and other material on employee stock ownership plans. Send for a list of publications. Best bets: The Employee Ownership Casebook, which lists ESOP companies in many different industries, and The Employee Ownership Report, the organization's bimonthly newsletter. If you're brand-new to the subject, ask for a free brochurs called "Selling Stock to an ESOP in a Closely Held Firm," or get NCEO's introductory videotape. Don't expect any TV-style glitz from the latter -- it's just Center director Corey Rosen talking into the camera -- but it gives a lucid exposition of why companies may want to consider ESOPs.

If you want to meet or talk with ESOP experts and practitioners, the Center can provide you with a list of consultants, lawyers, and ESOP companies; it also organizes periodic regional workshops. For additional information, more conferences, and more names of practitioners, contact The ESOP Association, a trade group located at 1725 DeSales St. N.W., Suite 401, Washington D.C. 20036.
