Sign Of The Times

You think crime doesn't pay? Talk to Michael Aichenbaum. Crime has done wonders for his young company, Colonial Lamplighters Inc., which sells electric yard lights in Detroit. Seems that neighborhood watch organizations have been buying the lamps as crime-prevention devices, pushing Colonial's sales to $1.3 million in just six years. To date, the company has installed more than 28,000 lights in crime-plagued Detroit, and Aichenbaum is eager to expand. "We basically could move into any major urban metropolitan area," he says. Sad to say, he's probably right.
