A publisher, Pat McGovern, comments on how during a recession more people buy industry journals.

How do you know when a recession is coming? Pat McGovern, who publishes more than 100 industry journals (including PC World and Computerworld), says he looks at his renewal rates. As bad times near, renewals go up. "When people get worried about a recession, they want to know what's going on in their industry," he says. "Maybe they think it will help them hold onto their jobs, or find another job it they're laid off." And how are renewal rates doing these days? "They're climbing."
