Shake, Rattle, And Rest
Non-profit group establishes foundation to raise money for retiring entertainers lacking insurance policies.
Rock 'n' roll stars are among the lousiest businesspeople around, and a lot of the early ones are now entering their twilight years with no life insurance, health insurance, or even Social Security. But a nonprofit group in Seminole, Fla., is coming to their rescue. Led by singer Joey Dee ("The Peppermint Twist"), the Foundation for the Love of Rock 'n' Roll Inc. is trying to raise $25 million to $27 million to open a retirement home for musicians of the '50s and '60s. The plans call for a facility complete with a recording studio for outsiders and a performing arts hall -- with preference for rooms given to performers who contributed to a recording that made the Billboard charts.
