Joseph Sansonetti's plan was to purchase a smoke-detector manufacturing plant and use its license to handle radioactive americium to build a lifetime battery. But when a hotel he was staying in caught fire, he came up with a better idea. Result: the world's first battery-operated talking smoke alarm, made by Pioneer Manufacturing Inc., in St. Petersburg, for residences and hotels.
