Carl W. Rausch calls it "the Holy Grail" of the IV drug industry: artificial blood. His firm, Biopure Corp., in Boston, doesn't make artificial blood per se. Rather the company is working on the purification of hemoglobin drawn from cows. Clinical trials in humans are expected to begin later this year.
