An Eye On Supplies
Clean Harbors Inc. provides some tips for establishing an environmentally safe office.
JULY 1989
At Clean Harbors Inc., a $100-million Quincy, Mass., Inc. 100 company that analyzes, cleans up, and transports hazardous waste, guidelines for purchasing office supplies include:
* Paper, not Styrofoam, drinking cups
* Biodegradable hand soap for bathrooms
* Recycled paper for stationery
In addition, Clean Harbors forgoes putting salt on the company parking lot after a snowstorm, using only a plow instead.
"The costs associated with these guidelines are negligible in real dollars," says media-relations manager Karen Clancy, "and in many instances actually save money. But the long-term environmental savings are tremendous."
