Trash Into Cash

Start-up salvages and sells parts of junked cars on the foreign market.

Auto salvage shops typically strip cars of some parts and crush and shred the rest. A growing number of companies in the industry, such as Recycled Auto Parts of Brattleboro, in Guilford, Vt., think there are more profitable ways to reuse junked cars. Its plan: recover aluminum, lead, batteries, and even fluids from cars, and sell mechanical and body parts on the foreign market.
