With the push toward the paperless office, services that box and house paperwork would seem to face diminishing demand. Yet a number of operations that deal with paperwork -- picking it up, filing it in secure surroundings, automating it for quick retrieval, and redelivering a specific document on request -- have been enjoying increasingly brisk business. Two reasons: even the paperless part of an office has to be made foolproof; and as for the paper part -- contracts, patents, blueprints, copyrights, and the like -- the stowage service's shelf space is cheaper than yours.
That's the pitch of the newest archivist on the national scene. Safesite, in Billerica, Mass., has opened outlets in nine cities and now claims third place in the market, with an average account, says marketing director Charlie Estes, of more than $200 a month. Pricing for boxed records is based on the number of 10-by-12-by-14.5-inch corrugated cubes in storage, plus frequency of pickup, retrieval, and delivery. The warehouser is so confident it can handle vital records for about a third of what the average business spends on paper and computer-media filing and security, it offers a free in-depth analysis of a company's records-management costs and practices. The study takes about six weeks to execute.
