Checking Insurer Safety
Finding affordable coverage (see "Hard-to-get Property-Casualty Coverage," September 1992, [Article link]) isn't the only insurance problem companies face today. Here's an absolutely invaluable resource to help you conduct checkups on your insurer: a 23-page brochure, "How to Get Safety Information from Your Financial Institution," is available free from Weiss Research (800-289-9222), a West Palm Beach, Fla., organization well known for spotting problems at insurance companies and savings-and-loan associations.
The brochure includes perforated questionnaire cards to be mailed directly to insurers, bankers, and brokers. It also includes safety standards. (For insurers, Weiss looks for at least 50¢ worth of capital to cover every high-risk dollar.)
