Excerpt from a phone conversation about modern technology.
The following is not a script for one of the new "small planet" IBM commercials. It is a more-or-less verbatim account of a recent phone conversation between my wife, Sara, and her 70-year-old mother, Martha, about the wonders of modern technology.
Martha: My friend bought a Compound recently.
Sara: A Compound?
Martha: Yeah, you know, a Compound personal computer.
Sara: You mean a Compaq, Ma?
Martha: Yeah. She says she talks to it.
Sara: Ma, you mean she uses it to talk to other people, on the Internet?
Martha: Yeah. She says she used her Compound to find a new man.
Sara: You mean she found a boyfriend on the Internet?
Martha: Yeah. She says she found him in America.
Sara: Ma, that's America On-line.
Martha: Yeah, that's what I said. She used her Compound to find a new man in America. Isn't technology amazing?
