Some states are requiring employers to give parents time off to attend school events.
Employees who only a few years ago were coping with parental leave and day care now face a new set of concerns. As parents of school-age children, many employees need time off to attend school events. At least two states are making sure employers give them that time.
California's Family School Partnership Act prohibits companies employing 25 or more from discriminating against workers who take 40 hours or less of annual leave to participate in school activities. Employees must use paid time off or get their employer's approval for time off without pay.
Minnesota has guaranteed parents 16 hours a year to attend scholastic events that cannot be scheduled outside working hours. They may use accrued paid time off, but employers must also grant time off without pay.
As workplace demographics evolve, other states will consider similar legislation. Meanwhile, you'd be wise to prepare for other workplace changes relating to school-age children.
