Operations: How Much Time at the Fax Machine?
BY Phaedra Hise
A CEO explains how much time employees spend using the fax machine.
On any given day, Roddy Temporary Services' nine employees fax information between two offices and to about 20 customers of the $2.5-million temp agency in Ann Arbor, Mich. CEO Philip Roddy estimates that his entire staff spends a total of one hour a day at the fax machine.
In fact, employees spend 30 minutes a day each at the fax machine, according to a recent survey of 200 small companies by Impulse Research, in Los Angeles. Photocopying takes up 24 minutes a day for each person, and printing 21 minutes. The companies surveyed had an average of nine employees each, four of whom visited printers, faxes, and copiers about nine times a day, for an average of 75 minutes total. That's a staff total of 25 man-hours a week, or the equivalent of a part-time employee.
