Direct marketers should take heed of the Federal Trade Commission's new Telemarketing Sales Rule, which took effect last month. The rule cracks down on abusive telemarketing practices, such as calling consumers at home who have asked not to be called a second time. While targeted mainly at consumer telemarketers, the rule also affects business-to-business marketers of nondurable office goods such as pencils, paper, printer toner, and cleaning supplies.

To help companies follow the regulations, the Direct Marketing Association joined forces with the Federal Trade Commission to produce the guide Complying with the Telemarketing Sales Rule and a pamphlet, A Business Checklist for Direct Marketers, which provides an overview.
