Aspen Publishers' compensation study also found that private companies still lag behind their public counterparts in building wealth for executives. "Small private companies need to understand their long-term focus and build a compensation strategy that will help them attain it," says report author Howard Goldsmith, "such as creating ownership opportunities for executives when it's appropriate."
