Last year was a great year for venture-capital investment, thanks to the industry's success in raising funds and cashing out existing holdings through initial public offerings. According to a recent survey of 600 venture-capital firms by Coopers & Lybrand, venture capitalists invested more than $6.6 billion in U.S.-based companies last year.
