Hands On

Manager's Notebook

When employees at Doherty Painting & Construction, a $1.5-million contractor based in San Francisco, started making excuses not to attend weekly safety-training meetings, owner Frances Doherty changed the meeting time. Now the 20-minute training sessions take place on payday. To pick up a paycheck, all 30 employees must come hear their peers give presentations about subjects such as safety equipment. The result: 100% attendance so far this year.
