Groom Potential Managers
A program that makes it less likely that new managers will fail.
Manager's Notebook
At JPL Productions, a media-production company in Harrisburg, Pa., employees always manage interns before being promoted to management jobs. Michael Horgan, president of the company, which had $1.6 million in 1995 sales, devised the program to prevent new managers from "bombing because they are given a totally different group of tasks to perform." All five JPL managers have been promoted from within.
