Most of this list is explicable. There are the boomtowns (Las Vegas, where one out every 42 residents started a company last year, and a trio of cities on the eastern slope of the Colorado Rockies), the isolated but energetic New West (Boise, Anchorage), and Texas (Austin, Houston, Dallas). Which leaves, well, Ann Arbor. Go Wolverines?

The Top 100 list is a ranking by per capita start-up rate (the number of start-ups in 1997 divided by population). The 200 largest metro areas with sufficient start-up data were considered for inclusion in the ranking; the metro-area boundaries were defined by County Data Corp./The Lead Sheet, in Winooski, Vt. The 11 metro areas for which data were insufficient are Mobile, Ala.; Orange County, N.Y.; Joliet, Ill.; McAllen, Tex.; Aurora, Ill.; Lorain-Elyria, Ohio; Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; Vancouver, Wash.; Niagara Falls, N.Y.; Bradenton, Fla.; and Beaver County, Pa. The nationwide rank by population column on the table shows how the remaining metro areas rank by their market size (their population).

This table and the others in the almanac reflect the record of 1997 start-up activity compiled by County Data Corp./The Lead Sheet.

Conspicuously absent from the home-business rankings are the number one and number six most frequently started businesses in the country: miscellaneous retail stores and restaurants, neither of which function well in one's living room. One surprise, though: of the 33,067 general-contracting companies launched in 1997, 28,887--or 87%--operated from home.

General-contracting and construction businesses--which in more than a few cases would be impossible to distinguish from each other--separately rank second and third. If SIC industry definitions combined the two, then all those builders would constitute the largest category.
