Things I Can't Live Without: Andrew Cull, Remote Medical International

Why Andrew Cull, founder of Remote Medical International, counts a rescue knife, a flashlight, and a bunch of chickens among his favorite things

Andrew Cull prefers simplicity over flash, buys as much as he can on Craigslist, and tries to keep his carbon footprint small. "I've never been much for trinkets," says Cull, founder of Remote Medical International (No. 147 on the Inc. 500), which provides medical training and equipment in hard-to-reach locales. And his tool kit stays the same whether he is sitting at his desk in Seattle, working at his part-time paramedic job, or training military personnel in Alaska. The chickens, however, stay at home.

SKEDCO EXTREME MEDICINE/RESCUE KNIFE

"When you put a knife in your pocket, you find uses for it. I started carrying it in my paramedic job and used it to cut people out of their seat belts. But I've also used it to slice cheese and bread in Anchorage, open a box at a client site, and cut a string off my suit in Norway."
COST: $127

SUREFIRE E1B BACKUP LED FLASHLIGHT

"You can buy 10 cheap flashlights or invest in one great one. I used mine once when the power went out while I was in Argentina. I like the fact that it's really small."
COST: $149

CHICKENS

"I love to cook, but organic eggs are expensive, so we bought five chickens. My 2-year-old daughter's favorite game is to push them off our deck -- it's very low. But they follow her everywhere. She's queen of the chickens."
COST: $3 each

WHAT I COVET: BMW R 1200 GS ADVENTURE

"I would really like to ride this motorcycle down to Tierra del Fuego, the southernmost tip of South America, or even around the world. But in the meantime, I would be happy just to get on the dirt roads up in the North Cascades."
COST: $18,450
