"I flew a jetpack today! It was ah-mazing," says Rob Lowe, sounding a lot like his über-energetic onscreen persona, Chris Traeger, from NBC's Parks and Recreation. But the water jetpack wasn't for the show.
It was part of the Los Angeles launch of InsideHook, a daily email newsletter for "established men." Lowe joined the start-up in March as a partner and curator of the company's Los Angeles edition, which suggests things to do, eat, and see.
Recent picks included a microbrew-of-the-month club and a zero-gravity flight. InsideHook co-founder Andy Russell has invested in similar services, including DailyCandy and Thrillist.
InsideHook isn't Lowe's first foray into the business world.
In 2010, he and real estate mogul Tom Barrack bought Miramax from Disney for $660 million. With Barrack, Lowe is also a partner in Colony American Homes, a real estate investment trust that buys homes in foreclosure and turns them into rentals. Lowe is also launching his own skin care company, Profile.
"I'm not opposed to being a spokesman," he says, "but it's just so much more interesting to have your hands dirty building a company."
