Being a social media spectator is getting you nowhere. These 3 simple steps will get you off the sidelines.

Feeling shy and uncertain about social media? You probably know by now that you're missing a key opportunity to build your business. It's not too late to change that.

There are far too many success stories out there to deny the power of Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and other social sites. Yes, it's true: A strong presence on one or more of them will help your business grow. And, as a bonus, your participation may boost your confidence as well. A good confidence boost will make a difference in your life and business.

So let's get you on board and navigating social media opportunities like a pro.

There is only one way to do this: Get ready with a simple strategy, take aim so that you're on target, and fire off your ideas to see what happens. No more hesitating; just do it in these three simple steps!

Ready...
Don't overwhelm yourself; choose just one social site to start out. Select the one that best suits you and your business goals (say, Facebook if your business is a Main Street storefront with loyal customers; Twitter if you do more online sales; Pinterest if you're in design). Placing your focus on one site will help boost your confidence and take away much of the overwhelming "where do I begin" feeling. Stay away from the other sites until you learn to navigate and thrive in one social setting.

Aim...
Examine who your audience is and target content to them. Aiming for the right audience will also lessen the stress. Remember, you are an expert. You know how to talk about your product or service in a friendly, compelling manner, right? And you know what's important to others, so you can hold a two-way conversation, correct? That's all you have to do in social media. Put helpful tips out there, share your information, answer questions, have a few nice conversations, and share the information that others post.

Fire!
Now you have a real strategy, albeit a basic one. Begin with 20 minutes a day, three times a week and no more. In each 20-minute time period, post one piece of information about your company: a blog link, a fun fact, or a helpful tidbit. Next, share the link to one online article or video that is relevant to your audience. This can be someone else's content. Lastly, comment on or retweet an update that someone else has posted.

That's it. Really. We learn by doing--and before long, you'll be doing more! This is a great way to break the ice and start navigating the refreshing and bountiful waters of social media.
