This is a methane-fueled rocket engine typically used as a thruster for steering. Above the earth's atmosphere, aerodynamic controls no longer work because there's no air to push against. So rockets are outfitted with at least 12 of these. A quick fire on one of them--lasting as little as 100 milliseconds--can be enough to guide a 40-foot-long rocket. Number sold in 2006: None; this was a prototype whose design helped the company secure a $3.3 million subcontract with a company doing work for NASA.
