Bill Strickland credits pottery - and ceramics teacher Frank Ross - with saving his life by showing him a way out of his decaying Pittsburgh neighborhood. Ross became a savior and a mentor. He took Strickland to see Fallingwater, the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house in western Pennsylvania. Strickland wasn't just moved by the architecture, but also by the light. He vowed to bring both to his downtrodden neighborhood of Manchester. He did with this building, which is home to his after school and summer programs for at-risk kids and adult job-training programs. |
