Great Design? 11 Products Destined to be Kitschy

Nominated by: John Jay, executive creative director, Wieden + Kennedy

"Twenty years ago, a design icon was born, the Whistling Bird Tea Kettle by architect Michael Graves for Alessi. In 2000, as a part of Target's genius plan to reinvent the discount store category, Graves replicates the Alessi concept with his Spinning Whistle Tea Kettle. While his signature wit was clearly evident, the design lacked the sense of timing and visual balance of its older sibling. Being timeless, the second time around will always prove to be a designers most difficult challenge. So never underestimate the power of a bird, especially if you can make it whistle."
