Residents of Second Life are represented by a customizable graphical image known as an avatar. Most avatars are human in appearance. Users can select avatars of either gender and modify them by changing the avatar's clothing or physical attributes. Some avatars have wings or horns, while others look like squirrels or warthogs. People who prefer to have animal-like avatars are nicknamed "furries."
