Borrowing $500 on his mother's furniture, John H. Johnson funded his first publication, Ebony in 1945, the first magazine to bring a positive portrayal of blacks to the mass market. By the time of his death in August 2005, he had established a publishing empire, which includes a cosmetics company and a book division.
