In the 1940s, this navy tool worker saw a spring coil fall off a worktable and thought it could make a fun toy. Dubbing it the Slinky, he and his wife sold 400 for a dollar a piece within an hour at a nearby department store. Since then, more than 250 million Slinkys have been sold worldwide.
