What You Can Expect from an Obama Presidency

Like John McCain, Obama proposes a cap-and-trade program to reduce greenhouse gasses. However, Obama's regime is more stringent -- he would require an 80 percent reduction from 1990 emissions levels by 2050. Moreover, Obama would encourage alternative energy supplies and efficiency through a combination of regulations as well as incentives and investments, which he would pay for by auctioning off CO2 emissions permits that constitute the cap-and-trade program. Obama also supports limited increases in domestic oil and natural gas production, and short-term relief for the present high-energy prices. While he rejects drilling in both the Artic National Wildlife Refuge and the outer continental shelf, he supports oil production in some shale fields and the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska.
