Paul Wolf, Wolf Technologies
FULL ESSAY
Wolf Technologies, LLC is a company founded in 2009 to develop and market Light Check, an electronic diagnostics device to test trailer lights. Light Check has been in development for almost 2 years.
Light Check is a self-contained, portable device with an internal 12 volt rechargeable battery, internal electronics and software to test trailer light circuits. Light Check connects directly to the trailer light wiring and allows one person to quickly and easily check the trailer tail and clearance lights, brake lights and turn signal lights without a towing vehicle or second person. The internal electronic diagnostics tests for short circuits and open circuits. A fault light indicates the type of problem detected and source indicator lights also show the operator which light circuit is not functioning properly.
Mr. Wolf with Light Check is the proud recipient of the 2009 Innovate ND Idea Champion Award. Innovate ND is sponsored by North Dakota Department of Commerce, University of North Dakota Center for Innovation and the North Dakota State University Research and Technology Park. Out of almost 100 applicants, Mr. Wolf with Light Check was selected as one of the 5 winners. See the following for more information: http://www.innovatend.com/?id=20&ncid=1&nid=53
The idea for the product came about because Mr. Wolf has owned a boat for many years. Boats require a trailer for transportation and all trailers require properly operating signal, brake and clearance lights for safety in traffic. Trailer lights are have a high failure rate from exposure to harsh road conditions like rain, snow, salt, road dirt, mud and grime, and an occasional dunking in water. The wires are exposed and subject to chafe and damage and the connectors (usually brass) are particularly prone to corrosion. Bumping and jarring on bumps and rough roads also causes light bulbs to fail more often. The bottom line is trailer lights must be tested frequently.
The normal way to test trailer lights requires a towing vehicle to be driven to the trailer, connected to the trailer wiring, then walking back and forth to test each trailer light function, or a second person must be in the towing vehicle to operate the brake, signal and clearance lights while the other person observes the trailer lights for proper operation. Light Check eliminates the need for the towing vehicle and second person.
Due to the economic recession, there have been millions of job opportunities lost across the nation. The recession convinced Mr. Wolf that business development and ownership is the only means have control over our career destiny. Light Check, used by businesses with fleets of trailers, will help those businesses reduce their trailer maintenance expenses.
The prize money from the Newpreneur of the Year contest would be used to pay off business loans, purchase more inventory, expand the manufacturing capacity and increase marketing efforts to get the product to market faster with higher level of market penetration. The money would also be used to develop the planned "premium" version of Light Check.
