For small companies without the resources to hire a team of designers, an online library of royalty-free graphic-design templates is now available for Microsoft Word for Mac. Released on Dec. 4 by StockLayouts, a Beaverton, Ore.-based graphic-design firm, the templates were previously only compatible with Adobe programs and Microsoft Word for the PC.

The templates, which include pre-designed layouts, high-resolution stock photos, and original artwork, can be edited by users or implemented as is for use in brochures, newsletters, stationery, business cards, postcards, ads, menus and posters.

They can be purchased separately or in bundled collections, with individual templates starting at $29.

Small Businesses vs. Spyware

Webroot, a Boulder, Colo. software company, is preparing to launch new software specifically designed to protect growing businesses from spyware and viruses.

Geared specifically towards small and midsize companies that may have limited IT infrastructures, personnel, and budgets, Webroot SME Security is designed to be easy to use and flexible.

It installs fairly easily, and requires no additional configuration during its setup. The software scans computers without interrupting other applications, and then issues reports about any spyware and virus trends on a company's network.

It is backed by Webroot's customer-support team, and is automatically updated (multiple times a day) with information about new spyware and viruses, allowing the software to recognize and delete the latest threats.

With growing companies in mind, Webroot has made it easy to expand the software to incorporate additional users and locations.

A Yellow Marker for the Internet

The i-Lighter is a new tool to help manage Web-browsing and provide an alternative to cutting, pasting, and book marking online content. In beta testing since March, a full version will be released Dec. 8.

The tool works as a digital highlighter, providing an easy way to search, save, and annotate snippets of information from Web pages, e-mails, and other documents.

Highlighted information is then saved into an account at i-Lighter.com, where users can access it from any PC, PDA, or mobile phone, as well as share it with others.

The basic version will be available for free, and a paid monthly subscription version will be available with additional features such as data encryption.
