A State Senate bill would offer employees paid leave financed by their paychecks.
A New Jersey State Senate bill would provide employees with up to six weeks of paid leave by deducting one dollar from their paychecks every week.
Under the proposed measure, introduced by majority leader Stephen M. Sweeney, workers could take paid leave for the birth of a child, an adoption or to take care of an ailing family member.
The bill would be an extension of the 1993 federal Family and Medical Leave Act, which requires businesses with more than 50 employees to provide workers up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave a year for illness or family emergencies.
Local businesses opposed to an earlier measure that allowed 10 weeks of paid leave said the move would interfere with workers' schedules, while forcing them to hire costly temporary replacements.
