Chocolate Bunny Sales Steady

Despite economic woes, retailers are expecting Easter spending to remain strong.

While most shoppers were planning to hit discount stores for Easter treats and decorations this weekend, they're expected to spend about as much as last year, according to the National Retail Federation.

Of nearly 8,000 consumers surveyed by the Washington-based trade group, over half said they will do their Easter shopping at discount stores this year. At the same time, they planned to spend an average of $135, just four cents below last year, the survey found. While many said they would cut down on shopping for clothes over the holiday, most expected to spend a few extra dollars on food.

"Easter is typically seen as the official kick-off to spring, when retailers debut new clothes and consumers are in the mood to buy for warmer weather," NRF CEO Tracy Mullin in a statement. "Although this is one of the earliest Easter holidays on record, retailers are hoping that this year will be no different."
