Workers Fret Over Gas Prices

A survey finds prices at the pumps are a bigger concern than unemployment.

Despite a downturn in the job market, U.S. workers are more concerned with high gas prices than unemployment, according to Adecco, a Melville, NY-based staffing firm.

Just one in four workers in a recent survey said they were saving money to guard against possible unemployment, the firm reported this week. Of 2,000 respondents, as many as 58 percent said they had no intention of putting aside cash for unemployment, the survey found.

Instead, most workers were concerned with high gas prices, followed by stagnant paychecks and work-life balance, the survey found. Just six percent cited career advancement, down from 12 percent in a similar survey conducted last year.

The survey also found that older employees were less likely than their younger co-workers to save for unemployment.
