Credit Cards Big With Small Employers

April 17, 2007 -- The vast majority of small-business owners use credit cards for business purchases, and most pay off their balance in full, according to a new survey.

In an online survey of 279 small-business owners, a full 90 percent said they used business credit cards for business-related expenses, according to SurePayroll, a Chicago-based payroll processing firm. Some 29 percent said they used the cards primarily to avoid mixing business and personal expenses, while others cited advantages for record keeping, convenience, rewards, and easing short-term cash flow issues.

Small-business owners were also more likely than the average consumer to pay off credit card bills in full, the survey found. Up to 63 percent of respondents said they regularly paid their balances in full, compared to just 40 percent of non-business owners.
