April 17, 2007 -- Led by soaring gas prices, consumer prices rose by 0.6 percent in March, the Labor Department reported Tuesday.
Stripped of food and energy prices, which rose by 5.9 percent and included an 11 percent increase in gas prices, core consumer prices rose by 0.1 percent, the smallest monthly increase this year.
Prices paid for housing, clothing, and medical care grew at a slower rate in March, while transportation and communications prices inched up.
