Product Roundup: DLP Gets It Done

Unbelievably Lightweight

DLP technology has had a tremendous impact on the way that mobile executives and road warriors present their messages. Ultrabright, affordable projectors weighing less than 4 lbs. have made it easy for traveling presenters to deliver the big picture.

BenQ, NEC, InFocus, and other manufacturers have created many models of these microportable projectors. The new SL703S from BenQ is a good example of this class of DLP superportables. It weighs only 3.4 lbs. and delivers 1100 ANSI lumens of native SVGA resolution. Its projection distance range is 3.3' to 32.8'. The estimated street price (ESP) is $1,799.

For higher, native XGA resolution, BenQ's SL705X projector delivers 1100 ANSI lumens of brightness in an ultraportable 3.8-lb. package for an ESP of only $2,799. This small wonder is compatible with a broad range of input signals, including component HDTV (720p and 1080i).

Another exceptional unit in this class is the 2.4-lb., 1100-lumen LP70 from InFocus. This miniscule, native XGA projector sells for less than $3,100, measures only 2.58" (H) x 6.1" (L) x 7.8" (W), and includes such advanced features as intelligent electronics that "sense" ambient room light and automatically adjusts the image. NEC's model LT150Z is also a winner for road warriors -- with native XGA resolution, 1000 lumens output, automatic setup, and a built-in PC card viewer. It weighs only 3.8 lbs. and has a list price of $3,695.

Versatile Machines

Building on the many technological advantages of the latest DLP projection components from Texas Instruments, several manufacturers have created an entirely new group of versatile, cost-effective projectors.

Until late last year, projectors with an output of 2000 ANSI lumens or more were relatively large and expensive, and reserved for installation in boardrooms and auditoriums. These powerful machines typically weighed over 15 lbs. and cost more than $10,000. The new DX660 from BenQ delivers a room-filling 2000 ANSI lumens of HDTV compatible native XGA resolution, yet weighs in at only 6.6 lbs., measures 12.1" (W) x 3.5" (D) x 9.4" (H), and costs a good bit less than $5,000. BenQ's DX660, and similar projectors from NEC and InFocus, are bright enough for use in well-lit boardrooms and small lecture halls, but compact enough to fit under an airline seat.
