Mobile Communications: Business on the Move

The ultra-thin (13.9 mm) Motorola Razr V3 mobile phone, with its sleek metal case, clear speakerphone, solid feature set and excellent overall performance, makes it a pleasure to carry and use. It offers such advanced features as MPEG4 video playback, MMS (multimedia messaging), a VGA color camera, and Bluetooth functionality. The Razr V3 is available for less than $500 with service from Cingular.

LG's new VX8000 supports high-speed video/multimedia messaging on Verizon's EV-DO (Evolution-Data Optimized) network. This new super flip-phone ($200 after rebate with a two-year service agreement) can display V-Cast streaming video of news and sports, and capture 15-second video messages with its 1.3 megapixel camera.

More Than a Phone

If you want to simplify your portable technology, check out one of the new integrated smartphones. The easy to use Treo 650 combines a Palm OS PDA with a Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone, remote e-mail capabilities, an MP3 player, and a sharp 320 x 320 pixel color display for viewing photos and video clips. The unit also incorporates an alphanumeric keyboard and VGA camera, and is available with service from Sprint or Cingular for under $600.

The Audiovox PPC-6601 runs Microsoft Windows Mobile Software for Pocket PC 2003, and supports broadband access at up to 500 kbps for fast Web browsing and downloading e-mail attachments. This pocket PC features Wireless Sync, a built-in sliding QWERTY keyboard, 240 x 320 pixel color touch-screen, and Bluetooth capabilities. The PPC6601 is available from Verizon Wireless or Sprint for less than $550 with service agreement.

Office Access

Mobile executives, telecommuters, and other road warriors will benefit from the growing number of business centers and meeting venues. While hotels and cafes offer connectivity hotspots, ready-to-use offices from the Regus Group Network provide secure, high-speed Internet access, as well as technology and administrative support. With membership in the new Regus Network Access program ($25 per month/$300 annual), you can walk in, start working, and pay for use (per hour or day) at any Regus facility.

Sounds of Silence

Compact speakers and noise-reducing earphones make it easier to enjoy your portable audio in the air or on the road.

Bose QuietComfort 2 headphones offer state-of-the-art noise cancellation and excellent audio quality for about $300. Lighter in weight and cost, Sennheiser PXC-250 headphones (less than $150) weigh-in at only 2.2 ounces, but provide a solid 15 dB of low-frequency noise reduction. Earbud-type headphones with active noise reduction include the popular Sony MDR-NC11 (less than $150).

Portable speakers can greatly enhance your listening experience in a hotel room or a temporary office. Lightweight units such as the On Tour Portable Music Box from JBL (around $100), provide an enjoyable listening experience. The road-savvy Rolling Suiter from Boom Bags (about $275) incorporates three speakers, including an 8-watt subwoofer, and inputs for both MP3 player and microphone, into high-quality business luggage. Comfortable technology and a well-equipped workspace can help make any road trip a journey of discovery.
