Lots of things can go wrong when you bake and sell all-natural bread for a living, as brothers Ron and Andrew Siegel, co-owners of When Pigs Fly, know well. “So many factors can change a product--the dough mixer, the baker, the roll-out, the cooking time,” Ron says. After manufacturing, logistics is the next biggest concern. Fresh-baked bread is highly perishable, and if it’s not at the right sale location at the right time, it’s usually a write-off. That’s why the Siegels love their Mercedes-Benz Sprinters.

When Pigs Fly has six Sprinters, the newest being a 2012 Model 2500 Cargo Van with 144-inch wheelbase. The company uses them to deliver fresh bread to more than 300 supermarkets, farmers’ markets, and company-owned stores in a 100-mile radius from its new restaurant and headquarters in Kittery, Maine. “The Sprinters are hands-down the most dependable vehicles in our fleet,” Andrew attests, noting that their oldest Sprinter is approaching 400,000 miles with no major repairs.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter: My Sprinter, My Way

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Model 2500 Cargo Van is, literally, a turnkey solution for When Pigs Fly. Although the vans are highly configurable and easy to customize, the Siegels use theirs just as they come off the lot. “We just load the bread racks right in there, which is easy because of the high head room. They hold as much as a box truck-;way more than a regular cargo van,” Andrew says. “With their BlueTEC diesel engines, they get about 50 percent better fuel economy than the other vehicles in our delivery fleet. Our drivers love the comfort and maneuverability they provide.”

Since 2010, when Inc. last wrote about When Pigs Fly and the important part Sprinter plays in its success, the Siegels have received numerous calls from other business owners asking about the vans. “I always tell them that the Sprinters are every bit as reliable as we described, even in our tough Maine winters, and I always recommend they try them,” Andrew says. “You just can’t beat the high quality of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.”
