Year-over-year revenue growth may be the metric fast-growing companies care about the most, but nothing tops the all-powerful, unvarnished revenue figure. That benchmark has been--and remains--the universal symbol for success. Here are the U.S.’s true titans of industry among their peers within the Inc. 5000 fastest-growing companies list.
2013 Revenue: $1.62 billion

Total Quality Logistics provides third-party transportation and logistics services. The Cincinnati-based company, which bills itself as the second-largest truckload freight brokerage firm in the U.S. by revenue, has grown organically since its founding in 1997. From 2010 to 2013, it has also more than doubled its revenue, as well as its staff, which now numbers nearly 2,400.

TriNet in San Leandro, California, isn’t privately owned anymore since it launched its initial public offering in March. But the company, which specializes in outsourced benefits and payroll services, still made our list of the 5000 fastest-growing companies in America. TriNet’s clients include small and medium-size businesses in sectors such as technology, financial services, and professional services.

Government services company Carahsoft provides a variety of software, hardware, and IT support services to government agencies at the local, state, and federal levels. The Reston, Virginia-based company markets and sells products from Adobe, EMC, F5 Networks, HP, Open Source, SAP, and Symantec. Carahsoft has more than doubled its revenue from 2010 to 2013.

Houston’s Sun Coast Resources sells fuel, lubrication products, and related services to commercial and industrial customers, school districts, and government organizations. Founded in 1985, the company specializes in providing fuel to large businesses and utilities during crisis situations. (Think, natural disasters such as Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy.) Sun Coast added more than 1,200 jobs from 2010 to 2013, bringing its total employee headcount to nearly 1,700.
2013 Revenue: $1.98 billion

Founded in 1979 by four brothers, Flyers Energy franchises the Flyers fuel brand, distributing wholesale fuel, commercial fuel, and industrial lubricants. The company also produces and distributes renewable fuels and owns part of a solar power utility. Based in Auburn, California, Flyers grew its revenue by nearly 70 percent between 2010 and 2013. The company employs 485 people.
2013 Revenue: $2.51 billion

Prime Therapeutics manages pharmacy benefits for health plans, employers, and government programs, including Medicare and Medicaid. The Eagan, Minnesota-based company also processes claims, delivers medicine, and offers clinical services for patients with complex medical conditions. Prime Therapeutics has more than doubled its work force from 2010 to 2013.
2013 Revenue: $3.49 billion

Founded just five years ago, Bridger performs oil and natural gas gathering and processing services, including logistics and marketing. The fastest-growing U.S. energy company in 2013, Bridger also claimed the No. 4 spot on last year’s Inc. 5000 list, with a 23,308 percent three-year growth rate. The Addison, Texas-based company has operations in 11 states, including all major U.S. domestic crude oil production regions and basins.
2013 Revenue: $3.64 billion

Twinsburg, Ohio-based EnvisionRxOptions provides pharmacy benefit management services such as claims processing, mail-order delivery, disease management, and drug data analysis. The company more than tripled its revenue between 2010 and 2013 and nearly doubled its employee head count, which stands at more than 900. Also a 2013 Inc. 5000 honoree, Envision claimed the 1,397 spot on the list last year.

ABC Supply distributes building products for roofing, siding, windows, and other exterior construction work. Founded in 2001, the company is the largest wholesale distributor of roofing in the U.S. ABC Supply added nearly 1,200 jobs from 2010 to 2013, bringing its total number of employees to roughly 7,350.
2013 Revenue: $5.52 billion
Inc. 5000 Rank: No. 2,663
San Francisco’s Pacific Union Real Estate brokers the buying and selling of luxury residential and commercial properties. With 21 offices in the greater Bay Area, the company has an exclusive partnership with Christie’s property arm that allows it to market its properties to more buyers. Pacific Union has 646 employees, up from 467 in 2010.
