Jobs added between 2006 and 2009: 9,406
As a global company with offices spread out in nine countries around the world, including in the United Arab Emirates and Bulgaria, Sutherland Global Services has added an impressive number of jobs not just in the United States, but also internationally. In the past three years, the company, which provides integrated business process outsourcing for clients in a variety of industries and in the Fortune 500 category, has grown its staff to 29,000 people.

In the past few years, Integrity Staffing Solutions, a provider of temporary hiring positions, has invested more in marketing and sales staff, anticipating a smooth exit out of the recession. The strategy worked, and Integrity Staffing has added 8,951 employees in the last three years alone, for a total of approximately 30,000 employees at the end of 2009. The company also put more focus on potential customers by adding a Career Transitions business line, which provides coaching services to job seekers. CEO Todd Bavol says the new line “exhibited a commitment to our markets and gave us an opportunity to build great relationships.”

In the past few years, Employment Plus has not only grown its headcount, it has also expanded its service offerings. Originally founded as a traditional staffing firm, Employment Plus now offers a full range of HR solutions to its clients, and has expanded nationally from four offices in Indiana to 60 locations in 13 states.

This Applebee’s franchiser, which owns and operates more than 200 restaurants across the U.S., has used the recession to be much choosier when it comes to hiring. Apple American Group's careful screening and a focus on team-building has yielded a retention rate that, according to Jim Gamelin, a senior vice president at the company, "significantly outperforms industry norms."

iQor, a business process outsourcing company, uses technology to streamline the hiring process. All aspects of the hiring are handled online, from an employee referral program that has produced some 30,000 resumes, to an online emotional aptitude survey called Qfit, which assesses a candidate for his or her cultural fit.

CornerStone Staffing Solutions, another staffing firm, has adapted its hiring practices in order to continue growing during the recession. According to Larry James, a managing director, the company focused on staffing in industries that were somewhat recession proof, such as food services. The business has been adding 100 workers a week to its payroll, says James. The company expects to see W-2s increase by 3,000 or more in the coming year.

Ovations Food Services manages food service operations for stadiums, ballparks, and convention centers. Karen Muros, the company's vice president of human resources, says much of the company’s hiring surge, which amounts to approximately 3,500 new hires in the past three years, is a result of a commitment to assuring compliance at their facilities. This has created a need to add more supervisors to their management structure, increase training positions, HR positions, and support managers, as well as create internal audit positions to provide checks and balances, says Muros.

In the last two years Towne Park, a provider of valet parking and concierge services for more than 300 properties nationwide, has tripled in size with its staff, acquiring two other companies in its industry. Towne Park, which is on pace to add 3,900 new employees in 2010 alone, has spent the past year building its in-house recruiting team.

VXI Global Solutions, a business process outsourcing firm that specializes in software development and multilingual call centers, has become part of the entrepreneurial revival that is happening in Youngstown, Ohio. The company recently opened a call center in Youngstown and has plans to double its capacity there. According to George Scileppi, a projects director, the company anticipates hiring an additional 1,000 call center representatives globally by the end of 2010. Scileppi attributes much of this hiring to a shift in the company's business model, from an outbound-centric sales force to an inbound support model.

Last year was the biggest overall growth year in the history of New Breed Logistics, a third-party logistics company that helps streamline complex logistics operations at other organizations. The growth allowed the company to build out its executive team, and to hire middle managers and directors. Joe Hauck, vice president of sales, marketing, and communications, estimates that new hires now account for approximately 10 percent of the overall company employee count, which stands at 7,000.
