At The LaSalle Network, your birthday doesn't matter. "Why celebrate a day you just wake up breathing?" asks CEO Tom Gimbel. "We celebrate the anniversary of your hire day—your 'rebirthday'—because your career was reborn when you came to work with us." Employees of the Chicago-based staffing firm are greeted once a year with decorations, balloons and gifts of appreciation. When the recession hit in 2008, the company extended hours but also invested in a keg machine tapped every day at 5 p.m. to acknowledge employees' extra efforts. Employees highlight their accomplishments and challenges through charades at weekly staff meetings.
