When camera maker GoPro makes a hiring announcement, people take notice. The company--fresh off of its IPO filing--appointed former Microsoft executive Tony Bates as president on June 4. Following the announcement, the company experienced a massive spike in mentions on Twitter and other social media platforms, according to data gathered for Inc. from social intelligence company Synthesio. GoPro was mentioned 17,442 times the day of the announcement, up from 10,092 the day before.
Two other notable startups, car-sharing services Lyft and Uber, also saw increases in social media mentions last week. The jumps stemmed from news that Virginia's Commissioner for the Department of Motor Vehicles sent a cease-and-desist letter to the companies on June 5 barring them from operating in the state, as well as headlines about Colorado Governor John Kickenlooper's signing of the first legislation to legitimize ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft. Uber received 6,010 social mentions on June 6, while Lyft got 5,876 mentions that day.
Outside of the startup space, Apple CEO Tim Cook had the greatest number of social media mentions among the 25 tech executives Synthesio tracks. According to Synthesio's data, Cook was mentioned a total of 52,793 times between June 1 and June 7. The tech titan was mentioned 27,103 times on June 2 alone, after unveiling iOS 8 at Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference. To put this number in perspective, social media darlings Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk were mentioned 10,612 and 10,954 times, respectively, over the entire week.
