There are major perks to being looked at as an authoritative voice in your field. Customers feel safer doing business with you, publicity is easier to find, and more people want to work for you. In a busy world full of competitors, being looked at as more reliable than your rivals is a huge advantage.
While most people think it takes years of experience to become an expert in their field, they are following the wrong path.
With a few simple tips, you can be branded as an authority in whatever you'd like. Below, I'll show you exactly how to do this. Use this advice correctly, and you'll notice major benefits throughout the life of your company.
1. Immerse yourself in the industry
This was one of the best pieces of advice from Tim Ferriss's 4 hour workweek. Becoming an expert has a lot to do with who you're affiliated with in the industry. If customers see you with other industry leaders, you'll get the same reputation. And by always being around industry leaders, you'll pick up on their behavior and learn from them.
The key to doing this right is fully immersing yourself in these organizations. If you join a club, don't just sit in the corner and be shy. Speak up and make sure everyone in the room knows who you. You want to have bold ideas and make your presence known. At the same time, it's essential that you learn as much as you can from everyone else. Use people who are much smarter than you to get ahead.
2. Publish a book that's industry related
These days, more and more people are publishing books. Since it's never been easier to get a book out, publishing has become a special weapon for boosting sales and marketing.
When it comes to writing a book, most people run away because they think writing will take all their time and is a lot of work. There are many ways to make this process easier for you and still allow you to push out great material. If you do not want or have the time to write, a great alternative is getting a ghostwriter. What this allows you to do is outline the book to best highlight your ideas and thoughts, but then allow someone else to do the heavy lifting.
3. Start your own podcast
One of the smartest marketing and selling techniques is to start your own podcast. Everyone wants to be interviewed, and having your own podcast allows you to use this to your advantage.
One of my favorite podcast hosts is Jason Calacanis from This Week in Startups. He is a great example of how to use a podcast to become an industry expert. Calacanis uses his podcast to get to every major entrepreneur and angel investor in the world. This helps him build his own brand and learn a lot from successful people in the startup scene. Lucky for him, Calacanis is an angel investor himself. He's able to get connections to great companies and deals through the relationships he makes on air.
Learn from Calacanis and do the same thing for your company. You can easily get a podcast started using Skype and publish them on a WordPress site. Once you get some traction, you'll be able to reach tons of major authorities in your field. And when that happens, you're well on your way to becoming an expert yourself.
