    Element AI | Montreal and Toronto

    Montreal has quickly become an artificial intelligence hub, thanks in part to an investment by Microsoft for an undisclosed sum in Element AI, an AI applied research lab founded by "deep learning" pioneer Yoshua Bengio.

    Breather | Montreal

    Breather lets customers book private workspaces and conference rooms in the U.S., Canada, and London on demand. The company has raised approximately $69 million in venture capital money.

    Wellness startup League wants to make it easier for small businesses to customize health benefits for their employees. In June, the company received one of the largest Series A rounds ($25 million) in Canadian history.

    Thalmic Labs | Waterloo

    The creator of a smart armband that lets users control their computer or phone through gestures, Thalmic Labs is one of the darlings of the Waterloo tech corridor. The company has raised more than $120 million in venture capital so far.

    In its eight-year-history, messaging app Kik has garnered plenty of notoriety because its millions of users can use the service anonymously. The company has raised more than $120 million in funding in total.

    Hootsuite | Vancouver

    Marketing software Hootsuite is one of the best-known Canadian startups in the world, having raised $250 million in outside funding. The company has been expected to go public for several years, though it's not clear if Hootsuite will do so in 2017.

    Hubba | Toronto

    A "LinkedIn for products," Hubba's platform collects product information on brands and distributes it to retailers. Clients include Unilever and ABInBev , and the company is currently in the process of raising a $45 million round.
