Since my first lemonade stand, I've always been hustling. From hosting car washes to working three jobs simultaneously, diversifying my income streams is something I've been doing for years. Though I run my own business, I also have two side-hustles that I work on for fun and extra cash.

During the day, I run a marketing and PR agency. When night comes around, I work on my e-commerce store and also contribute to publications to earn some extra funds.

Here's three ways a side-hustle can help you too.

Side-hustling can give you a sense of liberation.

We naturally want to make an impact in the world around us, and when we feel like we can't do that, we get frustrated. No wonder so many millennials quit their jobs after a year or two, feeling like they're not "fulfilled."

The truth is, working in Corporate America may not satisfy your itch to make a difference or pursue your dreams, but it will definitely pay the bills. Instead of quitting your day job, you can use your side hustle to make your own impact.

With a side hustle, you're free to choose what you want to do. The only hard-and-fast rule in business is that you must create value for your customers. Whatever need you want to fill, or whatever problem you want to solve in the world, you can create a business to do that.

When you have a real mission, and a goal you're working toward that you've chosen for yourself, you wake up every morning excited to tackle the day so you can get that much closer to your dream.

You can be own boss and learn how to project manage.

That's the gift of running a side hustle. The entire operation begins and ends with you. You have to come up with the idea, test it out, create your product, market it, and manage the money. No one is there to hold your hand or fix your problems when you fail. (And if someone is bailing you out, do yourself a favor and become truly independent.)

You'll learn what products sell and don't sell, how financing works, how to market, how to build connections, and how to put out fires when things go terribly wrong.

There's no better way to experience the real, authentic world than by just going out there and starting something. And your side hustle is one of the best ways to do that.

You can earn extra income for a safety net.

Instead, starting a side hustle will allow you to create an adventure for yourself and decide what to do at every turn. No one else is calling the shots. There'll be surprises at every turn.

You'll have the safety to take risk and try new things because you still have a day job to pay the bills.

Plus, the extra income you get from your hustle can go towards more adventures. You can choose to put it back into your business and do more with it, or use it to travel to the world and climb those mountains you've been dreaming about.
