One thing that's great is that they don't even ask for an email opt-in
When I initially heard Tucker Max, the co-founder of Scribe Books, was going to put all of their training material online for free, I was skeptical.
In full transparency, I'm not an affiliate nor did I get paid to write this article. Actually, I'm a paying client of Scribe Books. I have paid tens of thousands of dollars for their training.
I have no other affiliation than that I use their products, and am honestly a fan. I'm a professional writer and going through their process has dramatically improved my writing skills. It's also changed my publishing decisions.
I'm speaking as a writer and as a person. This is an incredible free resource for any business person wanting to write and publish a book. They take you through the whole process, start-to-finish. This isn't just beginner stuff. I'm speaking as a professional writer. It's the whole process.
I thought it was pretty crazy that Scribe decided to put all of their training online for free. It didn't make sense to me from a business perspective. Consequently, I asked Tucker Max if I could interview him about it.

Why did you put all your material online for free?
I've been in books for almost 20 years and before Scribe helped people like Tim Ferriss, Peter Thiel, Seth Godin, Robert Greene, Dave Asprey with their books. I love working with people like that, but at the same time, I don't believe that rich people should be the only ones with access to the best information about writing and publishing books. Our mission as a company is to help everyone on Earth write and publish their book. How could we say that's our mission, and make people pay for the information?
How exactly do you make money?
We're a service company. Our prices start at $10,000, and our ideal client is someone who needs to write their book but doesn't have the time to do it all themselves. They pay us, and we make the process faster and easier for them. If they can't afford us, that's fine, they can still get all the exact info on how to do it for free. They just have to do it themselves.
Has putting all your material online for free cost you money and future customers?
It's hard to say precisely. Even if it had cost money, that's fine, we believe in the mission so if that's the price we have to pay, so be it. But I believe it's actually made us money.
How? Hasn't it resulted in people just doing the process on their own?
Maybe, but I doubt it. If you were going to do it on your own, you wouldn't pay us anyway. But by having the absolute best-in-class information, then we become the place every author goes for information. Even if an author doesn't buy, they respect us and talk about us to people who do.
What about sales? Does this help or hurt sales to clients who are considering working with you?
We know for a fact this has resulted in sales. We've had many authors tell us that seeing the whole process laid out in detail gave them full confidence in us. None of our competitors do anything close to this. They are either lack confidence in their process or they are trying to sell information courses. Either way, we can out-compete them by giving this away.
What about business strategy? How does this affect competitors?
We think the future of books is professional self-publishing, and our goal is to be the premier company in self-publishing. We want to be the unquestioned leader in that space. I think we already are, and giving away this level of material is proof of that. After helping more than 1,300 authors with their books in only five years, the proof is right there.
