If you're not familiar with the name Virgil Abloh, that's about to change.
Here's the quick Cliff's Notes version: Abloh is a longtime friend of Kanye West and was his creative director for years. He was nominated for a Grammy for his art direction on Watch the Throne, the Kanye West and Jay Z album. His Milan-based streetwear label Off-White is popular among celebrities.
And now, Virgil Abloh is bringing his high-end fashion label to Sweden. Off-White is collaborating with Ikea to design furniture.
Ikea made the big announcement on stage at Democratic Design Day in Sweden on June 7. They kicked off the collaboration with Abloh's interpretation of the so-hot-right-now Frakta bag. Abloh's version is made from cardboard with the word "SCULPTURE" printed in large block letters on the side.
In Ikea's announcement about the collaboration, Abloh vowed to push the limits of design. "Given how tremendous this opportunity is, I'm not content to make another chair," he said.
Off-White and Ikea will collaborate on a collection of pieces specifically designed for millennials.
Abloh spoke about the opportunity to design for a generation buying their very first pieces of real furniture. "Largely people grow up in their parents' environment. They've never had to consider furniture. Then when they're off on their own and have their own aesthetic, what are their first purchases? I'm interested in thinking about how those purchases are informed," Virgil says.
The collection will launch sometime in 2019. Abloh says he wants students be to be part of the design process. No other details about the final collection are available yet. Chairs? Couches? A reimagined Billy bookcase? We'll have to wait to find out.
