When Nir Eyal was building his Silicon Valley-based advertising startup, he became obsessed with how social platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter entice people into coming back for more. Ultimately, he wrote two books on the topic, Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products and Indistractable: How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life, which debunk a lot of the common complaints about social media.

Distractions have become an even more prevalent part of everyday life as more people work from home, care for children, and deal with the anxiety of living through a pandemic. Which is why Eyal's advice is more relevant than ever--and why he's the guest on this week's episode of What I Know

Although many products are designed to get people hooked, we're not powerless to resist them. Eyal says he frequently hears people saying that there's nothing they can do about giving into distractions because the technology is simply built to be addicting. "It's one of the reasons I wrote Indistractable," he says. "It's bullshit."
