Not a day goes by that I don't feel a considerable amount of work tension. We rationalize this as just "part of the game" as a growth company founder and CEO. But does it have to be this way? Is there a way we can better understand why we feel tension? And, if we recognize why, is there something we can do to alleviate works stress?
I would hope that we all have a basic belief that less tension is better than more tension and that less tension in our business should open up for better leadership, better management and improved decision-making.
Your first task as to why you are tense is an honest appraisal of you.
The best CEO's, executives, founders, investors, fill in any role that you admire, have a healthy amount of self-awareness. Do you look inward with honesty? Do you ask the professionals closest to you for candid feedback?
My bet is that your source of tension can be summarized in one simple Chinese proverb,
"Tension is who you think you should be. Relaxation is who you are".
Stop worrying about if others like you - it is a waste of time.
Stop worrying about following some media-hyped idol's lead - it's all PR and has nothing to do with you or your business.
Stop thinking about what your employees think about you - just ask them.
Stop spending time on social media platforms in order to promote yourself - it's a fool's errand and has little to no impact on your business.
Stop trying to be someone you think you should be - relax - be the best version of you.
Many of us lack a bit of confidence either situationally or in general and we decide to cover that lack of confidence be trying to be someone else. I can share that I too occasionally fall into this trap especially in new situations. It is a trap created by our fear.
Relax, be who you are. That is us at our best.
